How do I remove tiles without breaking them?
Removing tiles can be messy and time consuming, but there are some simple steps you can take to make your life easier. Here’s our top tips for removing wall and floor tiles without breaking them:
- Use a heat gun or hair dryer to help soften the grout. This is a time-consuming process, but it’s well worth effort
- Next, use a knife to cut any silicone or paint surrounding the tiles. Then, use a grout cutting tool to scrape the grout away until you reach the wall. This will help isolate the tiles, allowing you to focus on removing one at a time
- The first tile is usually the hardest to remove – we recommend starting from the outer edge and working inwards.
- Tap the corner of the tile to see whether there are any loose edges that are already coming away from the plaster. Then, slide a chisel or putty knife behind the tile and hit it lightly. The tile should then pop off whole. If it doesn’t, you will need to apply firmer pressure.
Top tip: make sure you wear safety glasses and gloves to protect your hands and face. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, tiles will break during the removal process. Broken tiles can fly across the room and they tend to be very sharp.
Also, we recommend preparing the room first. Take everything out of the room and tape down plastic sheeting to try and contain the dust.
How do I whiten grouting on bathroom tiles?
Grout can become discoloured over time if it is not looked after properly. This can make the tiles look old and detract from the look and feel of your room. We suggest using a specialised grout cleaner to give your grout a new lease of life. Using a dedicated cleaner will remove limescale and other residue that has built up.
We recommend LTP Grout Stain Remover, which has been specially designed for use with tiles. It is unsuitable for glazed and unglazed ceramics as well as slate, terracotta and stone. It can be used indoors or out in either be diluted or concentrated form. LTP Grout Stain Remover is not suitable for limestone or marble.
You can prevent grout discolouration by using a quality sealant at the time of fitting.

How much does it cost to install a bathroom?
The cost of fitting a bathroom is dependent on a number of factors, so it’s difficult to provide a ‘one size fits all’ quote. The tradesman will take a number of things into consideration, including days required to complete the job, size of the room, complexity of the installation and area of fitting (for example, London prices tend to be higher).
When planning a bathroom remodel, always get in contact with tradespeople before starting your project to get an estimate. This will allow you to factor these costs into your budget. Always read reviews and get word of mouth recommendations from friends and family wherever possible. We are able to recommend trusted professionals in the Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester area. Always get multiple quotes.
It can be tempting to DIY some aspects of the bathroom installation to help reduce costs. Unless you have experience in the building industry, we would discourage you from doing this to ensure the installation is completed to a high standard and your investment will stand the test of time.

Which bathroom tiles are best for a small bathroom?
Tiles can be used to make a small bathroom look bigger. Here’s our favourite ways to create the impression of increased space.
- Large format tiles – If you have a small bathroom or ensuite, we highly recommend using large format tiles. Having fewer grout lines will help redirect the eye and stop the space feeling cluttered
- Brick tiles – metro tiles are also an excellent choice for small bathrooms when layed horizontally. This will help the bathroom feel wider and elongate the room
- Neutral colours – Whilst bold colours are in vogue right now, it may be better to pick a neutral shade such as white or cream to help reflect the light
Tiles can crack for a number of reasons, so it’s important to determine the underlying reason so that you can tackle the issue and stop it from becoming an ongoing problem. Reasons for tiles cracking include:
- Incorrect installation – sometimes bathroom tiles crack as a result of incorrect installation. Inexperienced tilers may select the wrong adhesive or not apply it properly to the back of the tile
- Failing to prepare – cracked tiles may occur due to the wall or floor not being prepared for tiling properly. Always enlist the help of a professional to help
- Impact – even the strongest materials can be damaged by impact. The tile may have cracked from an item falling on it or sustained heavy load
- Temperature change – extreme temperature change may cause tiles to crack. Try and maintain a steady temperature in your home
- Water damage – water damage to the supporting wall can damage the adhesive and cause tiles to crack and fall off
- Building movement – building foundations can shift over time
To prevent tiles from cracking, always ensure you are using high quality tiles such as those supplied by New Image in Weymouth. Select the right tiles for your project and make sure they are installed correctly by a professional using proper techniques and adhesive.

Bathroom tiles should not change colour over time. If you are experiencing this, it could indicate that you have a water leak, which is causing high levels of water absorption. We recommend enlisting the help of a professional to get to the route of the problem.
Will WD-40 clean bathroom tiles?
A light coat of WD-40 on a cloth can help remove soap scum from bathroom tiles and prevent mould and mildew. It can also be used to clean grout.
Whilst WD-40 can be used effectively, we recommend using a dedicated tile cleaner such as LTP Multipurpose spray.
Will bathroom tiles smell?
Your bathroom tiles should not smell. If they do, this can be a sign that there is mould or mildew either behind the tile or on the tile itself. To combat smelly tiles, consider spraying them with diluted baking powder and white vinegar.
If you believe mould to be an issue, you should get this looked at by a professional to stop it getting worse. Living with mould for a long period of time can have a negative effect on your health, especially if you suffer a respiratory condition such as asthma.
Will bleach damage bathroom tiles?
Bleach can damage bathroom tiles over a prolonged period of time. Bleach is a caustic liquid and will damage your tiles protective layer that prevents water getting in. It can strip colour and destroy silicone and grout. This can lead to water damage behind you tiles and cause your tiles to loosen from the wall.
We highly recommend using a dedicated tile cleaner, such as LTP Multipurpose Spray to maintain your tiles protective properties. Browse our full range of tile cleaners in store or online.
Top tip: It’s really important to choose the correct cleaner for your tiles. Natural stone tiles, for instance, require different cleaning methods than ceramic or porcelain. If you’re unsure, please contact us and one of our friendly team will make recommendations over the phone.

In short, there is no easy answer to this question because the price of a kitchen depends on so many factors. The best guide we can give you is that the largest percentage of kitchens we sell are between £10,000 and £25,000.
These are a number of factors that will determine the price of designing a kitchen with New Image in Weymouth. These include:

- Kitchen style – e.g. if handle-less, traditional shaker or bespoke made to order
- Door choice – whether this is a vinyl wrap, foil wrap, MFC slab door, smooth painted, solid wood painted or bespoke real wood
- Worktop material – what type of worktop material you want e.g., laminate, compact laminate, resin, solid wood, bamboo, quartz, granite etc. These costs can vary from a few hundred pounds to many thousands.
- Appliances – keeping your existing appliances will bring down the price, whereas purchasing all new appliances will add to the final quote. Choice of appliances can vary depending on what specification and requirements you have. For example, you may want a basic oven at £400 or a higher end range cooker at £5,000
- Handle choice – do you want handles or handle-less doors? Generally this can vary between less than £100 for all your kitchen handles to several hundred pounds
- Sink and tap choice, whether you choose a standard inset sink, stainless steel, resin, granite, or ceramic sink. The tap again could be a basic kitchen tap or a Quooker boiling tap.

What are the benefits of using wood effect tiles?
There are many benefits to using wood effect tiles over traditional hardwood flooring. These benefits are as follows:
- Moisture Resistance: Unlike real wood panels and hardwood flooring, wood effect tiles are suitable for areas which regularly get wet, or where moisture may be a concern – such as kitchens, bathrooms, wet rooms, or exterior spaces.
- Easy Maintenance: Unlike hardwood flooring which will need special products, such as polish, wood effect tiles are incredibly easy to keep clean. Wood effect tiles will never stain! We recommend wiping or mopping your wood effect tiles to clean them.
- Versatility: Our range of wood effect tiles here at New Image comes in a vast selection of colours, patterns, and sizes
- Cost: Wood effect tiles are a far more cost-friendly alternative to hardwood flooring. Not only are they sold at a much lower price point, they are hardwearing and do not require time consuming and costly maintenance.

What are the pros of built-in vs freestanding kitchen appliances?
Built-in kitchen appliances provide a seamless look in all kitchens, however, they can be pricer and are far less portable. On the other hand, freestanding appliances offer flexibility and easier installation, but they can be bulky and may not work perfectly with your kitchen design.
If you’re considering your options for kitchen appliances, we recommend visiting our Weymouth showroom where a dedicated member of our team will gladly discuss any of your queries with you.

When remodelling a bathroom what comes first?
Your tradesman will be able to tell you the order in which jobs need to be tackled after assessing your existing bathroom and consulting your plans. The order is likely to vary between projects, but a bathroom installation typically follows this order:
- Demolition – remove existing bathroom and tiles
- First fix – qualified plumbers and electricians will ensure all of the necessary wires and pipework are in place
- Tiling – wall and floor tiles will be installed
- Bathroom suite and furniture installed – at this point tradesman will fit the bath, shower, sink, toilet and any bathroom storage furniture
- Painting and decorating – the final step is to paint the room and add finishing touches and accessories

Why do tiles crack?
Why have my bathroom tiles changed colour?
