Period Property Restoration – Styling Suggestions and Tips

Over the years we have helped many customers restore their period homes, creating elegant bathrooms, kitchens and hallways that are in keeping with the overall look and style of the property.

Whether you’re looking to recreate classic features or simply give a nod to your home’s heritage, we can help you design eye catching spaces that are full of character and will stand the test of time.

Choosing the right tiles for your period home

In traditional Victorian period properties, the hallway was one of the most important rooms in the house. It was a place of grandeur, where home owners could display their wealth and seek to impress their guests with ornate tiles, laid in intricate patterns.

Unfortunately, many period properties have since lost this feature, but there are a number of modern solutions if you’re looking to create an authentic look. At New Image we stock an extensive range of porcelain and vitrified ceramic Victorian tiles, which have been carefully designed to mimic traditional patterns and layouts. We have a wide selection of borders and colours, which can be mixed to create bespoke patterns. These can be used on the floor or to create decorative panels around fireplaces or other original features.

Our experienced design team can also help you choose classic flooring styles to be used throughout the rest of your home. Natural stone tiles have been used for centuries and are an excellent option for period properties. They are extremely hardwearing and durable and the different textures will give a rustic appearance in keeping with the rest of the home.

Traditional kitchens combining function and style

Solid wood kitchens with granite worktops and shaker style doors look great in period homes, especially when combined with decorative elements such as cornices and plinths. Traditionally, the cupboards would have been natural wood, but a neutral colour palette can also be used. Cream, white and duck egg blue have always been popular colourways, but we are seeing an increasing number of customers choose dark and striking colours to add a modern twist.

Exposed beams and brickwork can help to create an authentic look and carefully thought out storage solutions are an excellent way to ensure kitchens remain functional. Incorporating a larder cupboard or exposed shelving is a nice touch and in keeping with more traditional styles.

Sleek and elegant bathroom designs

We have seen a resurgence in Victorian inspired bathroom suites in the last couple of years. This elegant style looks great in a range of homes and can help create a luxurious and tranquil space, where you can relax and unwind.

If space permits, a free standing, roll top bath is a great statement piece, which will help tie the look together. Many of the leading brands have developed heritage ranges, including wall mounted cisterns with a pull chain flush, heated towel rails and ornate mixer taps, which look great on their own or when styled as an entire collection.

Metro tiles in cream, white or grey are the ideal choice for a traditional bathroom.
