Open plan kitchen

Open plan kitchens are ideal for families because they allow everyone to congregate in one room. Waste disposal units are a great alternative for dealing with home food waste

We’ve known for a long time that waste disposal units are fantastic appliances for disposing of home food waste. However we find that many people visiting us want to know more about them and find out exactly what is a waste disposal unit. They are in fact a little device that is fitted to the outlet drain of your sink, usually a half bowl. It can be turned on to mash or grind up all the non-liquid waste that collects in your kitchen sink. Once all the food waste has been ground down it can easily be washed down the waste pipes and it will be treated by your waste water company.

How much is a waste disposal unit and what are the running costs?

Food waste disposal units range in price from about £100 upwards depending on the size and ferocity of the unit plus the fitting costs. Running costs are just pennies a week – they use about the same as a 100 watt light bulb for 3 minutes of running time and less water than a short toilet flush. There are no extra costs required for disposable bin bags, no cleaning materials required and it will have paid for itself in 2 to 3 years. Your kitchen will stay clean and fresh by eliminating bagged waste – no nasty whiffs that attract insects and vermin and you’ll also free up the space that a caddy requires.

A sink with waste disposal unit is better than composting food waste; no space is required or the mess of a compost heap; it saves on landfill, and addresses the issue of greenhouse gasses, methane and CO2, as they are not captured and reused from landfill sites.

Food waste that has been through a food disposal unit is beneficial to the environment. It is sent through the pipes into the water system and goes to sewage treatment works. There it is put to good use and helps with the smooth operation of sewage treatment using the process of anaerobic digestion where it is converted to biogas which in turn generates power that is then sold on to the National Grid. 80% of sewage works use this process saving a whopping 19 million tonnes of food waste going to landfill sites.

What Can We Do To Help?

We can all do our bit to save money for ourselves and help our environment at the same time.

• Only buy what you need.
• Organise your fridge;

1. Meat at the bottom- coldest area
2. Eggs in the middle
3. Butter & cheese at the top – warmest area
4. Bottles & condiments in the door
5. Salad and vegetables in the drawer

• Keep cheese wrapped
• Keep bread in a cool dark place & make breadcrumbs from stale bread
• Don’t store fruit and vegetables together
• Store potatoes, onions, squashes and garlic in a cool dark place
• Store tomatoes at room temperature, stem side down
• Freeze extra portions for use on another day

Whatever food waste you do produce should not be put into your regular waste bin but in a recycle [brown] bin for collection.

If you have a garden don’t just focus on maintaining your garden gates and fencing – think about your plant maintenance too! If you have a garden then a compost bin is useful for creating your own compost, which your plants will love, create a nutrient rich compost out of all your:

• Remember no cooked food should be put into a garden compost bin.

The UK falls behind the rest of Europe when it comes to sales of dishwashers with only 3 out of 10 households owning a dishwasher compared to 7 out of 10 households over the rest of Europe.

But statistics show that dishwashers are no longer considered a luxury purchase but more of a necessity in our increasingly busy lives and the appetite for modern kitchen appliances. However there is still the misconception that they are inefficient, costly to run, wasteful and an extravagant purchase.

Benefits of having a dishwasher

There are many benefits to owning a dishwasher; Time savings, energy savings, water savings, more hygienic and a lot less hassle than hand washing.

Plus the added benefit of there not being piles of dirty dishes cluttering up the worktops or clean dishes drip drying on the sink drainer- a dishwasher can hide a multitude of sins! Technology has turned these work horses into domestic goddesses.

Based on a family of 4 hand washing 2 meals worth of dishes a day, 7 days a week (56 place settings + all the pots and pans and other kitchen detritus) there could be financial savings of over £200 a year on water (up to 150 baths worth of water) and power consumption. There is no need to pre-wash, soak, scrub and rinse with a dishwasher, all you need to do is to scrape off the worst of the food scraps and the dishwasher will do the rest.

Handwashing equates to about 4 hours a week as opposed to 10 minutes to stack and unload a dishwasher. So think what you could do with an extra 4 hours a week, or an extra week a year:

Take an evening class and learn a new skill, homework, visit friends, spend quality time with the family, read a book, get some exercise or absolutely nothing!!

What can you wash?

Almost anything is the answer to that question! Crockery, utensils, pots and pans, ornaments, toys, cooker hood filters, garden tools, flip-flops, hairbrushes and combs, shower head, fridge drawers and shelves, oven shelves and pot stands, and even your hub caps. Look out for the ‘dishwasher safe’ label when purchasing. You can even wash your potatoes and cook a salmon in your dishwasher!

The list of things you can’t put in is shorter. The following items should be hand washed.

• lead crystal
• silverware,
• wood or bone handles
• antique hand painted china

Plan for a dishwasher

If you are having a new kitchen, or revamping your current kitchen, then plan a dishwasher into your design- or remove a floor unit if fitting retrospectively. They can be freestanding or integrated. Have it close to the sink so there is easy access to the plumbing, water supply and waste outlet, and you are keeping the ‘kitchen triangle’ intact.

There is a dishwasher to suit everyone’s needs- singles, couples and families and even the most bijoux of kitchens can fit a dishwasher. No more breakfast dishes in the sink all day waiting for you to get home from work and cleaning up after dinner takes a fraction of the time- leaving you time for the important things…..

Germs away!

With meal preparation, snacks, splashes and spills not to mention the odd pet or two, our kitchens are a party venue for germs and bacteria- in your sink, drainer, washing-up bowls, dish clothes, tea towels, sponges and chopping boards.

Temperatures above 60C will clean, and kill germs, properly and most hand washing is done at temperatures less than 28C potentially leaving harmful bacteria behind. Some dishwasher programmes will wash at 75C, infinitely more hygienic especially when combined with the very powerful detergents used in a dishwasher. Even economy washes are still more efficient at killing bacteria and germs than hand washing. A dishwasher will dry the load as well so there is no need for tea towels which also harbour harmful bacteria.

A Must for Young Families

Health and safety is a huge consideration if you have a young family. A dishwasher will ensure that worktops are clutter free- nothing for little hands to grab and spill because all the dirty crockery, pots and pans, cutlery, knives and kitchen gadgets can be put out of the way in the dishwasher.

Babies have a habit of putting everything in their mouths so, providing the plastic is dishwasher friendly, then their utensils, drinking cups, bottles, bibs and toys can all be washed in the dishwasher at 75C leaving them sparkling and hygienically clean and safe from bacteria and germs.

Items used for babies less than 6 months old need to be sterilised. Consider models with child safety locks. This will stop children from opening the dishwasher when operating or when not in use. It is easy to teach children to stack their dishes away and unload a dishwasher giving them some independence and responsibility.

What types of dishwashers are available?

Free standing, semi-integrated, fully integrated, slimline, full size and worktop models are available from most leading manufacturers. Slimline models will hold from 6 to 10 place settings while full size models will take up to 14 place settings.

Depending on the look you are trying for they could be a semi polished concrete effect or weathered floorboards, flagstones or parquet, patterned or plain. The great outdoors has natural appeal to most of us- the sky, earth, water and the effect of these elements makes us feel calm and refreshed and this is the most common time of the year that we start to plan changes. So why not combine the two and make changes that bring the outdoors indoors? Here are some great ideas to brighten up your kitchen and bathrooms this springtime.

Introducing plants and cut flowers is the most obvious ‘quick fix’ choice for bringing the outside in.

Cut flowers will bring instant colour and cheerfulness to any room but will just be a short term fix while potted plants will add refreshing, sculptural shades of green and give a room an instant face lift. Moreover in the humid warm conditions of a bath/shower room some plants will thrive regardless of whether you have green fingers or not;

• Bamboo needs very little light so is perfect for smaller dark rooms and can be grown in a pot with pebbles and water.
• Aloe Vera [the immortality plant] is almost indestructible and just keeps on giving.
• Cast iron plant loves to be ignored and will manage with low light levels and limited watering.
• Begonias thrive under fluorescent light so perfect for internal bathrooms.
• Dragon plants will help to purify the air and prefer low lighting levels and love the humidity of a bathroom.
• Orchids will add a real touch of class and thrive on the tropical conditions that a bathroom can provide.
• Spider plants must be one of the easiest plants to keep alive in almost any room.
• Peace lily plants offer an excellent filtration system, don’t need much care and are easy to maintain.

Pots of growing herbs or micro salads really help to brighten up your kitchen. Not only save you money but add aromatic scents to the room too and gives you the opportunity to utilise and recycle your old tin cans, jars, teapots and mugs. When you have harvested the herbs from your garden you can hang these to dry them out for a year round supply.

Don’t forget that plants don’t just have to sit on the window sill in your kitchen or bathroom- consider hanging baskets, ceiling/wall mounted pot hangers, wall mounted pots and floor standing pots or placing the plant on top of tall/wall cupboards.

Natural Elements can be injected into your scheme to enhance the outside/inside theme
